Types of Internet Access
Types of Internet Access
Dial-up
A dial-up modem converts digital signals from a computer to analogue signals that are then sent down the telephone line. A modem on the other end converts the analogue signal back to a digital signal the computer can understand.
Broadband
Cable broadband works on the same principles of ADSL broadband. The modem still receives data and signals from a wire and the connection is always on. However, instead of using copper wires, cable broadband uses fibre-optic materials.
fixed broadband
ADSL broadband comes from your local telephone exchange, owned by BT, through a Fixed Line Access Network made out of copper wires. ... The lines in the street connect to the wiring inside your house and provide you with an internet and phone connection through the BT socket on the wall.
fixed wireless
With the growing infrastructure of the GSM wireless networks, fixed wireless has also become a viable solution for broadband access. Using the 3G speed and reliability, businesses and homes can use fixed-wireless antenna technology to access broadband Internet and Layer 2 networks using fixed wireless broadband.
Satellite
Satellite internet equipment is made up of three main components: a geostationary satellite in space, a satellite dish mounted on your home and a modem that transmits internet signals from the dish to your computer. You obtain satellite internet through a satellite broadband provider.
Wireless hotspots
Put simply, a portable hotspot taps into 3G and/or 4G cellular networks, just like a smartphone does, and then wirelessly shares its data connection with other nearby (within 30 feet or so) Wi-Fi-enabled gadget—typically, between three and 8 or more at a time, depending on the device and the carrier.
mobile phones
Cell phones have an in-built antenna which is used to send packets of digital information back and forth with cell-phone towers via radio waves. Mobile phones connect to a cell tower in the area, and instead of connecting to another phone it connects to the Internet and can fetch or retrieve data.
